Artist Thota Vaikuntam, Hyderabad - Figurative art-Telangana Women

“I painted what I saw. I actually painted Boorgupally village and the surroundings somebody called them images of Telangana and the label stuck,” says Vaikuntam .

Born in 1942, in Boorugupally, Andhra Pradesh, the most prominent figurative painter took a diploma in painting and a degree in fine arts at the College of Fine Arts, Hyderabad in 1970.

He also won a fellowship from the MS University of Baroda. There he worked under the great artist K.G.Subramanian. Mr. Hemendra Bhatt, Mr. Rohit Zaveri, Mr.P.D. Dhumal and Mrs. Rini Dhumal were very close to him.

 He has won several awards (Bharat Bhavan Biennale Award, Bhopal,National Award, Govt. of India ),  his paintings are a part of several renowned collections and his works have been exhibited widely.

‘Telangana woman’ became his identity.



He says “I love to paint women with dark complexion, turmeric on the fore head, gigantic bindis and body with bright and colourful clothes.”
